What can be more exciting than watching the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Game (11.27.08), where the sensational Jonas Brothers hit the scene with their awesome performance.

The Disney Channel stars made it big time at the game. Demi Lovato, singer/actress/musician sung the Nationnal anthem and then during half-time, the Jonas Brothers performed their hits Tonight, Lovebug and Burnin’ Up.

Football fans including a hundred or so screaming girls on the field seem to have enjoyed the Jonas’ Brothers half-time show, but a bunch of male football fans didn’t look like they were ready to buy the boy band’s album, Kevin, Joe and Nick really looked hot. Watch out boys!

This page will help you reinstall Windows and reformat your hard disk in the process. You may need to do this for any one of the following reasons:

• You have a virus that can’t be removed with current anti-virus tools (or you just want to be absolutely sure it’s gone)
• Your PC has become sluggish or unstable
• You current installation of Windows is “hosed” or you are not able to start Windows at all, but there is nothing wrong with the PC’s hardware

These instructions assume that you will be installing Windows NT, 2000 or XP and that you will be using a standard Windows CD (from Microsoft). If your PC came with some type of “Recovery CD”, consult the documentation that came with it or contact the PC’s manufacturer. OIT cannot support the use of such CDs. We will also assume that your PC is capable of booting from one of its CD-ROM drives.

Step 1: Back up your files

This may or may not be possible. If you are unable to launch Windows, for example, you will not be able to run any backup tools or manually copy files. There are other things you can do in this situation, but that is beyond the scope of this page.

First, consider the files that you need to keep. All you really need to make copies of are the files that are unique to you or irreplaceable. For example, you will want to have copies of any Word documents you have written, school projects, e-mail (if you keep it stored on your local computer, rather than on the server), MP3s, pictures, etc. You do not need to back up applications like Microsoft Office or WinAmp because these can be reinstalled later from CD or downloaded again from a web site.

Some things might be trickier to back up. For example, if you keep e-mail on your computer and want to back it up, you will have to discover what files your e-mail application stores its messages in and then back those up. For any program such as this that stores files in a not-too-obvious place, consult the software’s manufacturer to see what needs to be backed up.

You can use any method that’s available to you to back up your files. You can use an actual back up program, or you can manually copy the files. Either way, you will need to get the files to a location other than the drive where you plan to install Windows. Some examples:

• Another hard drive installed in the PC or connected to it via USB or FireWire
• One or more CDs or DVDs
• Another computer, via the network
• Zip disks, Jaz disks, SuperDrive, etc.

Step 2: Disconnect from all networks

At the time of this writing, every version of Windows is vulnerable to remote attackers in it’s “out-of-the-box” state. An unpatched Windows computer will probably not even last 30 minutes on the Internet before it is compromised. Before you even begin to install such an insecure version of Windows, make sure it can’t connect to any other computers.

If you are on campus and your computer is infected with a virus or worm, this step may have already been involuntarily completed for you by OIT. You should still take steps to disconnect on your end just to be certain, though.

Unplug the PCs network cable and remove any wireless network adapters if you are near a wireless access point that allows automatic connections without any configuration by the user. If the wireless adapter is built-in, you are most likely using a laptop. Take the PC somewhere out of range of the wireless network. Georgia Tech’s LAWN requires you to enter an SSID and a WEP key. As long as you don’t enter this information, you will not be able to connect and should be safe.

Step 3: Install Windows

1. Insert your Windows CD.
2. Reboot the computer. It should either boot from the CD automatically or ask if you would like to boot from the CD. If it does not do either, you may need to change some boot settings in your BIOS. Consult your PC or motherboard’s manufacturer if you need help with this step.
3. Windows Setup will begin.
4. When asked if you want to set up or repair, hit Enter to set up Windows.
5. Read the license agreement and hit F8 if you agree.
6. If the setup program detects an existing installation of Windows and asks if you want to repair it, hit Esc to skip the repair.
7. The setup program will ask you where to install Windows. Highlight the existing “C: Partition1″ partition and hit D to delete it. Hit L to confirm.
8. Next, hit Enter to install Windows on the “Unpartitioned Space”.
9. Format the space as NTFS and continue the installation.
10. Later in the setup process, when you are asked for a password for the Administrator account (or any other account) do not leave it blank.

Step 4: Patch the system/Reconnect to the network

The first thing you should do when you are able to start Windows and log in is install updates from Microsoft. The easiest way to install Windows patches is to download them, but in order to do that, you need to be connected to a network. If you paid attention to Step 2, you know that it is not safe to connect your PC to a network right now, so what to do? There are a couple of ways to get connected without exposing yourself to too much risk of compromise from other systems on the network.

Option 1 (Windows XP only): Enable Windows’ built-in firewall

1. Click the Start button and open the Control Panel
2. Open “Network and Internet Connections”
3. Open “Network Connections” (icon on the bottom-right)
4. Right-click the Local Area Connection and choose Properties
5. Go to the Advanced tab
6. Check the box next to “Protect my computer and network…”
7. Click OK
8. Connect your PC to the local network and configure it as needed
   NOTE: XP’s built-in firewall is not active immediately when the computer is starting up. If you need to reboot for any reason before all patches are installed, you should disconnect from the network again until the boot process is complete.

Once you have a working connection, start Internet Explorer. Go to the Tools menu and choose Windows Update. Install all of the Critical Updates.

Option 2: Hardware

If you have access to a “DSL router” or similar device, connect the PC to the Internet through that. (NOTE: This does not mean the DSL modem itself, but an additional device. Some common ones are from LinkSys, NetGear and D-Link.) If you aren’t certain that you have access to one of these devices, please skip this option.

These devices aren’t technically considered firewalls, but because of the way they work, a handy side effect is that any computer behind such a device is difficult (if not impossible) to connect to from the Internet. You will still be vulnerable to attack from other computers behind the same router, but this most likely just includes the other computers or game consoles in your house. If you are not sure if they are safe, unplug everything from the router before connecting the newly formatted PC.

Once you have a working connection, start Internet Explorer. Go to the Tools menu and choose Windows Update. Install all of the Critical Updates.

Option 3: No network

If you are not able to protect your computer as described in Options 1 or 2, do not connect it to the Internet to download updates. In a race between the update process and the attacks on your system, you will probably lose every time.

In this case, you will need to go to another PC to download the updates and put them on a CD, Zip disk, USB flash drive, etc. Microsoft makes the updates available from their Download Center. Look for “Windows (Security & Updates)” on the menu to the left.

Once all of the security updates have been installed on the PC, you can connect it to the Internet, but you may still be open to vulnerabilities that haven’t yet been discovered and repaired by Microsoft. You might want to consider using some type of protection in the future (such as a router, firewall, or desktop firewall software).

Step 5: Restore your files and programs

If you began the reformat/reinstall process because of a virus infection, we strongly recommend installing anti-virus software before copying your old files back to the PC. If one or more of them is infected, you run the risk of activating the virus and having to start all over again. You can download VirusScan from OIT Software Distribution.

Once Windows is installed and patched, you can start copying all of your old files back to the appropriate locations on your disk (probably the same folder they were copied from originally in Step 1). You can also start installing all of your applications.

While many people may assume that choosing a dog is simply finding one you like (and perhaps can afford) there really is much more that should be considered before you make a final decision. Pet owners who fail to consider all the ramifications of their choices are often left with an unhappy relationship with their dog that can lead to serious consequences for both dog and owner. Choose the Right Breed

Before you adopt or buy a dog, it is extremely important that you know what type of breed would be best for your lifestyle and family. Choosing Puppies Is Harder than it Looks

Think Outside the Box

Often times pet owners may have their heart set on a certain dog breed but feel the dog may be too large or require too much care. Before giving up entirely you may want to consider a miniature dog of the same breed. For example, if you love Collies but you simply don’t have the room for a dog that size think about getting a Sheltie, which is a smaller breed that closely resembles a Collie but doesn’t need as much space or grooming as its full-sized cousin. If your chosen dog breed does not have a miniature variety, look at breeds in the same family (such as the herding or toy families) to find other dogs with many of the same characteristics of the dog breed you love. Dog breeds in each breeding family tend to share many characteristics, so chances are that you will find other dog breeds similar to your favorite but a more practical fit for your particular needs and lifestyle.

Jing Hua Wu, 47, shot to death three of his co-workers at SIPort.

According to Herald Tribune two of the victims were identified as Sid Agrawal, SiPort Chief Executive Officer and Brian Pugh, the company’s Vice President of Operations. A woman was also killed.Police are withholding the woman’s name until her next of kin have been notified.

Wu had recently been laid off from SiPort, a fabless digital radio semiconductor company in Mountain View. Wu remains at large and police warned that he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Wu is described as 5-foot-7 and weighing 170 pounds, with black eyes and black hair.

Anyone who encounters Wu is urged to keep their distance and to call Santa Clara police at 408-615-4700. If Wu is in another city, witnesses should call 911 to reach that city’s police department.

With alcohol fuel, you can become energy independent and help in the reversal of global warming. Acohol (ethanol) is a renewable fuel, and also, it is pretty much pollution free, since the by-products of combustion are only water and CO2.

It’s a much better fuel than gasoline, and you can use it in your car. You can even use alcohol to generate electricity. Alcohol fuel production is ecologically sustainable, revitalizes farms and communities, and creates huge new opportunities for small-scale businesses. Its byproducts are clean and valuable. Furthermore, it is economical to make, and your car will run cooler, faster, and better on ethanol.

You don’t have to throw away the internal combustion engine to convert a car to run on alcohol: just some minor adjustments. Electric cars will still need to get their power from somewhere.

In 2004, you can buy a car that is factory ready for alcohol fuel. The cars these days are made with variable fuel injection technology, which measures the oxygenate content of the fuel (since alcohol, ETOH, contains an oxygen molecule which makes it burn more efficiently when the timing and air/fuel mix are appropriately adjusted by a computer chip that is factory installed.

The oil companies know that oil reserves are dwindling, so the technology is gradually adapting. Experts in the ethanol industry predict 20% of the cars will be fueled by ethanol in just 6 to 8 years (and with ethanol production increasing by 12%/yr., we have the capacity to do this.)

Thomas Beatie, a married man who gave birth to a baby girl early this year is again pregnant.
According to Press Association, the second child is expected June 12 of next year.

Opinion has always been fiercely divided over Mr Beatie’s claim to be a man. Mr Beatie was born female - Tracy Lagondino - before undergoing “gender reassignment” surgery and having his breasts removed. Beatie was born a woman but underwent hormone therapy before he was legally declared a man.

>Solar energy is one the most resourceful sources of energy for the future. One of the reasons for this is that the total energy we receive each year from the sun is around 35,000 times the total energy used by man. Solar energy is presently being used on a smaller scale in furnaces for homes and to heat up swimming pools. On a larger scale use, solar energy could be used to run cars, power plants, and space ships.

>Wind power is another alternative energy source that could be used without producing by-products that are harmful to nature. Like solar power, harnessing the wind is highly dependent upon weather and location. The average wind velocity of Earth is around 9 m/sec. And the power that could be produced when a wind mill is facing the wind of 10 mi/hr. is around 50 watts.1

How a Basic Windmill Work
The fins of a windmill rotate in a vertical plane which is kept perpendicular to the wind by means of a tail fin. As wind flow crosses the blades of the windmill, it is forced to rotate and can be used to generate electricity. Another type of wind power generator is the two hollow half-drum-type wind collectors. This wind collector rotates in a single vertical axis, making this device independent of the wind direction, which may generate more electricity.

>Geothermal energy is an alternative energy source, although it is not resourceful enough to replace more than a minor amount of the future’s energy needs. Geothermal energy is obtained from the internal heat of the planet and can be used to generate steam to run a steam turbine. This in turn generates electricity, which is a very useful form of energy.

So, how does this help us? It turns out that if we drill down only three miles we can reach temperatures of 100 degrees, celsius, which is enough to boil water to run a steam-powered electric powerplant. Drilling three miles through the earth is possible, but not easy, so luckily there are easier routes to access this power source, known as geothermal hotspots.

What’s a Hotspot?
Geothermal hotspots are volcanic features which are found all around the world. Basically a hotspot is an area of reduced thickness in the mantle which transmits excess internal heat from the interior of the earth to the outer crust. These hotspots are well known for their unique effects on the surface, such as the volcanic islands of Hawaii, the mineral deposits and gyesers in Yellowstone National Park, or the hotsprings in Iceland. These geothermal hotspots can easily be used to generate electricity.

How do Geothermal-Energy Systems Work?
Some systems pump hot-water into permeable sedimentary hospots found underground and then use the steam to generate electricity. Then the used steam is condensed and sent back down to the permeable sedimentary stream. Another system utilizes volcanic magma which is still partly molten at around 650 degrees, celsius, to boil water which would generate electricity. Also there is a system which uses hot dry rock, which is just hardened magma, but still is extremely hot. To recover this heat from these rocks, a system is used which circulates water through the rock and transfers the heat up to a steam generator. The first system listed here is not as useful as other methods because of the acidic nature of the fluids found under the ground. These acidities require a lot of maintenance and upkeep on the equipment, and this cost reduces the economic effectiveness of the system. Therefore, geothermal energy systems are more inefficient than other alternative energy sources because of the costs required in upkeep and the shortage of potential sites.

>Tides - Even the power of the tides can be harnessed to produce electricity. Similar to the more conventional hydroelectric dams, the tidal process utilizes the natural motion of the tides to fill reservoirs, which are then slowly discharged through electricity-producing turbines. The former USSR produced 300 MW in its Lumkara plant using this method.

>Hydroelectricity comes from the damming of rivers and utilizing the potential energy stored in the water. As the water stored behind a dam is released at high pressure, its kinetic energy is transferred onto turbine blades and used to generate electricity. This system has enormous costs up front, but has relatively low maintenance costs and provides power quite cheaply. In the United States approximately 180,000 MW of hydroelectric power potential is available, and about a third of that is currently being harnessed.

Flu or influenza is a respiratory illness caused by a virus. It is characterized by high fever (over 101°F), extreme fatigue and body or muscle aches lasting 3 to 4 days or more. And may also give you a fever, tiredness, and general aches and pains. Flu usually starts with a dry sensation in the nose and throat.

With the sudden change of weather quite a large number of people are having some sort of flu symptoms. What is the relationship between flu and cold season? The flu loves winter or the cold season. It comes around between November and March. Study shows that many respiratory infections peak in winter, when people cluster together indoors. Also, the virus is transmitted much more efficiently in a cool environment. The virus spread much more readily at 20 percent humidity than at 80 percent.

How do we prevent this virus from hitting us? There are some preventive measures to at least lessen the impact. These are simple yet it can help us from not having to suffer from flu.

- Wash your hands. Alcohol-based hand rubs and gels are best. Ordinary soap and water will also help, and it’s not necessary to use very hot water or “antibacterial” soaps. Wash carefully after any contact with folks who have flu like symptoms.

- Keep your distance. The flu is most contagious within 3 feet of a patient.

- Wear a mask if you’re in a high-risk group and you can’t avoid getting near possible flu victims. Be sure your mask fits well. Keep it free of saliva and dry, and change it periodically.

- Protect others. Don’t go to work or school if you have the flu. Use a tissue to cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and dispose of it properly.

But the most effective way is to have your flu shot before the onset of the flu season. Best month is October. It will keep you safe for six months or until the end of flu season.

This is a also a great time to teach our children that what their idols are also human beings capable of making bad decisions. That the role model they are playing may not be the their role in real life. That these people are not perfect.

Also, this is a good time as any to take this incident as an example why they should not taking pictures not intended for the world to see. Children at times makes bad decisions. They take pictures thinking it will never go out of the four corner of their bedrooms. But unforseen events like this happen. Once it is out you can never take it back. And it will haunt you for the rest of your lives.

The very colorful life of Ted Turner will hit the bookshelves on Monday. Turner’s 433-page book reviews his rise as yachtsman, baseball team owner, cable visionary and philanthropist and once married to actress Jane Fonda.

In an interview, he said he decide to write his life story now because ” I thought I had something of benefit for younger people to read.  His autobiography  includes his  compelling portrait of his childhood, one in which he was sent to a boarding school as a four-year-old. “The age of four is a very impressionable time, and psychiatrists I’ve seen later in my life have attributed a number of insecurities I’ve had ever since to be being left alone at such a young age.”

Mr. Turner, who wrote the book with Bill Burke, a longtime media executive, goes on to describe how he took over a regional billboard company at the age of 24 following his father’s suicide and transformed it into Turner Broadcasting System Inc. He eventually sold the entire company, which then included two movie studios, the Atlanta Braves, CNN, and various cartoon and entertainment cable channels, to Time Warner for $7.6 billion in a deal that closed in October 1996.

It wasn’t religion that broke up his marriage to Jane Fonda, Ted Turner declares in a new memoir. He says he was “upset” when he discovered his wife’s “conversion,” but “it wasn’t because she had become Christian,” the 69-year-old Turner writes. He was upset because Fonda didn’t talk to him about it.

The son of a demanding advertising magnate who killed himself when Turner was in his mid-20s, he acknowledges his own disturbing mood swings and writes that in the 1980s he was told he was bipolar and placed on lithium. After a couple of years, feeling little change, he tried a new psychiatrist, who reversed the earlier diagnosis and canceled the prescription.

Mr. Turner has been in the public eye for decades. Today, Mr. Turner now 69 describes himself as the largest private landowner in the U.S.

The famous battle between the United States of America and Germany is considered one of the world’s bloodiest. This is where the American forces sufferred 81,000 casualties while the Germans sufferred 100,000 casualties.

After landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944, Allied soldiers broke through the existing defenses and sped across France, and Belgium, headed for the Rhine River, in Germany. In August, Paris was liberated. In September, British troops liberated Tournai, Brussels and Antwerp in Belgium. Many thought that the war would be over by Christmas.

For the military, moving at such a rapid pace caused major problems, because supplies could not reach the men quickly enough at the front lines. To relieve this problem, Allied commanders set up what was known as The Red Ball Express, a truck transport system made up of black drivers taken from the Quartermasters Corps, who were pressed into service to deliver 400,000 tons of desperately-needed materiel to the battlefront.

The Germans, realizing the severity of their situation, withdrew to Hitler’s West Wall, or Siegfried Line, a defense system 390 miles long, with more than 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and tank traps. Built during the period from 1938 to 1940, it stretched from Kleve, in the Netherlands, to the Swiss/German border.

It was from here that Hitler would launch a massive counteroffensive in the densely-forested, hilly terrain known as the Ardennes, with a force of more than 250,000 troops, backed by 970 tanks and 1,900 artillery guns and howitzers, in an attempt to recapture

Antwerp, a vital port from which the Germans could receive much-needed supplies.

The Allies did not consider the 85-mile Ardennes sector a major threat from the enemy, so it was thinly manned. That proved to be a very costly mistake. On the morning of Dec. 16, 1944, at 5:30 a.m., the Germans opened fire on American positions with a 1,000-round artillery barrage, beginning the Battle of the Bulge, so named because of the bulge the Germans had caused by breaking through the American defenses.

So dire was the situation at Bastogne that the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles) was rushed by truck on Dec. 19 to set up defensive positions around the besieged city. The division was under the command of Brig. Gen. Anthony McAuliffe, because Gen. Maxwell Taylor, the division commander, was in Washington

In 1833, the Al Maktoum dynasty of the Bani Yas tribe left the settlement of Abu Dhabi and took over the town of Dubai, “without resistance”.

From that point on, Dubai, a newly independent emirate was constantly at odds with the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

An attempt by the Qawasim to take over Dubai was thwarted.

In 1835, Dubai and the rest of the Trucial States signed a maritime truce with Britain and a “Perpetual Maritime Truce” about two decades later. Like four of its neighbors, Abu Dhabi, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Qaiwain, its position on the route to India made it an important location.
